{"id":3237,"date":"2018-06-01T16:17:09","date_gmt":"2018-06-01T14:17:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/territorio\/bientina\/"},"modified":"2026-03-17T09:30:56","modified_gmt":"2026-03-17T08:30:56","slug":"bientina","status":"publish","type":"territorio","link":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/territory\/bientina\/","title":{"rendered":"Bientina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Bientina<\/strong> has undergone numerous changes over the centuries, the most important linked to the <\/span><b>drying up <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of the nearby <\/span><b>Lake Sextum (<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the present \u201cLake of Bientina\u201d)<\/span><b>. <\/b><\/em><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was the Lorena family, successors of the Medici, who started the reclamation works of the Lake, later called <\/span><b>marsh.<\/b><\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The ancient lake<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vast plain stretching between the Pisa Mount and the Cerbaie Hills is what remains of the lake today, after the reclamation works commissioned by Leopoldo di Lorena between 1824 and 1859. Originally called Lake Sesto because situated only 6 km from the city of Lucca, it represented the largest of the lakes in Tuscany. Its drying up along with the development of industrial agriculture radically changed the fauna and flora, leading to the subsequent abandonment of fishing techniques and processing of marsh grass.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22516\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22516\" style=\"width: 324px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-22516\" src=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Bientina_eventi_Palio-Valentino_box.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"324\" height=\"273\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Bientina_eventi_Palio-Valentino_box.jpg 380w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Bientina_eventi_Palio-Valentino_box-300x253.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Bientina_eventi_Palio-Valentino_box-320x269.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 324px) 100vw, 324px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22516\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Il palio di San Valentino<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>St. Valentine<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The veneration of <\/span><b>St. Valentine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, patron saint of exorcists, dates back to 1699. A popular Palio is held in his honor every year in July. The saint\u2019s fame also impressed the Florentine rulers, who often came here to pay homage to his remains on display in the <\/span><b>Church of Santa Maria dell\u2019Assunta<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where a small interesting <\/span><b>Museum of Sacred Art <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has also been set up.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Between Past and Present<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visitors can still admire the remains of the <\/span><b>medieval walls, towers, and Keep<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, now home to the Municipal Library and archive, as well as the <\/span><b>Local Museum of the Ancient History<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (temporarily closed) with a special section dedicated to the Etruscan period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The economy is essentially based on commercial and artisanal activities, such as <\/span><b>antiques<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (one of the most traditional markets in Tuscany takes place every end of the month) and small industry, particularly the mechanics and manufacturing (furniture and its components,\u00a0 clothing, footwear, and leather processing.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":17116,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"template":"","class_list":["post-3237","territorio","type-territorio","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry"],"acf":[],"wpml_current_locale":"en_US","wpml_translations":[{"locale":"it_IT","id":859,"post_title":"Bientina","href":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/bientina\/"}],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/territorio\/3237","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/territorio"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/territorio"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/17116"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=3237"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
