Due to its position at the confluence of the Rivers Era and Arno, it was at the center of the wars among Pisa, Lucca, and Florence. Since the Renaissance, Pontedera has taken on a commercial role, so much that it boasts one of the oldest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/events\/548th-expo-san-luca-valdera-and-valdarno-fair-pontedera\/\">annual fairs<\/a> in Tuscany.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Piaggio<\/strong><\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20627\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20627\" style=\"width: 340px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-20627\" src=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Museo-Piaggio.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"340\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Museo-Piaggio.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Museo-Piaggio-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Museo-Piaggio-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Museo-Piaggio-320x320.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 340px) 100vw, 340px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20627\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Museo Piaggio Pontedera<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Pontedera is the <strong>city of engines.<\/strong> In 1924 Rinaldo Piaggio transferred part of the aeronautical construction industry from Genoa to there. Piaggio enlarged the plants and became thus an integral part of the city, even building a real neighborhood for the factory\u2019s employees.<\/p>\n<p>During the Second World War the city was bombed precisely due to the presence of aeronautical building plants. With the end of the conflict and the conversion to a motorcycle factory, Pontedera and Piaggio were part of the Italian economic boom of the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p>Since 2000 Pontedera has housed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/attrazione\/pontedera-piaggio-museum\/\">Piaggio Museum<\/a>, the largest museum in Italy dedicated to motorcycles and one of the largest in Europe with 5000 square meters displaying models of pre-war railway and aeronautical production, the <strong>Vespa collection<\/strong> with its most famous models, the Piaggio collection with <strong>Ape Ciao<\/strong> and its mopeds, and the sports brands of the Piaggio group, namely Aprilia, Gilera and Moto Guzzi.<\/p>\n<p>Housed in a former Piaggio warehouse, the nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.santannapisa.it\/en\/university\/biorobotics-institute-polo-santanna-valdera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Polo Sant\u2019Anna Valdera<\/a>, center of excellence as pertains robotics and information technology.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Contemporary Art<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Pontedera has also become a point of reference for <strong>contemporary art<\/strong> thanks to the Otello Cirri Exhibition Center, the permanent sculptures on the roundabouts, in the parks, and in the squares (such as the \u201cdesigner benches\u201d in Piazza Garibaldi) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/attrazione\/pontedera-murale-enrico-baj-contemporary-art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wall of Baj<\/a> along the railway.
