It was built by the Belforti around 960. The village is located south of the river Cecina, in the center of the valley of the same name.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-20315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Immagini-interne-TDP-6.png\" alt=\"Scorcio sulla Torre Belforti | Montecatini Val di Cecina | Terre di Pisa\" width=\"350\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Among fights and mines<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>South of the River Cecina, Montecatini Val di Cecina still preserves a compact medieval core with numerous testimonies of past times, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/attrazione\/montecatini-vdc-the-belforti-tower\/\">Torre Belforti<\/a>, the 14th-century Palazzo Pretorio (seat del Mine Museum Documentation Center) the Parish Church of San Biagio, asymmetrical, with three naves and no facade.<\/p>\n<p>Its history is concentrated in the centuries of struggles between Pisa, Volterra, and Florence to take possession of these places rich in minerals since the Etruscan period. The activity of copper extraction reached its peak in the 19th century, when the Camporciano mine became the largest in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Significant evidence of this industry is the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/attrazione\/the-mining-museum-of-montecatini-val-di-cecina\/\"> Mine Museum<\/a> just outside the village: it is an example of industrial archeology with parts of the 19th-century galleries, the<strong> Alfredo Well (Pozzo)<\/strong> with its original freight elevator, and the church of Santa Barbara, patroness of the miners.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-20311\" src=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/Immagini-interne-TDP-5.png\" alt=\"Querceto | Montecatini Val di Cecina | Terre di Pisa\" width=\"345\" height=\"345\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Sport and nature<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The hills and the woods around are ideal place to walking, cycling or MTB routes for both experts or simple hikers.
