The itinerary starts from Piazza dei Miracoli which represents the maximum splendor of the Romanesque Pisano, with authentic masterpieces such as the Cathedral, the Baptistery and the Monumental Cemetery.<\/p>\n
The architectural and artistic style of the “Romanico Pisano” represents the highest level that the Romanesque art reached in Pisa in the century XI and XII. Developed in Tuscany (especially in Lucca) and in the islands of Corsica and Sardinia, and politically influenced by the city of Pisa, then a powerful maritime republic, which had established trade and cultural relations with numerous ports and people in the Mediterranean.<\/p>\n
The main features of this style are that of recalling the architecture of the first Christian basilicas of Rome and of using many elements of Roman and Byzantine architecture, creating new and harmonious compositions, characterized by marble or granite colonnades, capitals with plant motifs , arches and lozenges, large semicircular apses and wooden roofing on trusses. The walls, and other structural elements, are made using local stones, such as tuff and white and gray marbles extracted from the Pisan Mountains. In Tuscany other materials were used such as white Carrara marble, green Prato marble, Siena travertine or granite.<\/p>\n
