After the blessing of the \u2018canapi\u2019 and of the tower-like figure where the salt needed to weigh it down was placed (salt coming from the Volterra Salt Mines), the costumed contestants enter the square and the competition begins. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">Each \u2018Contrada\u2019 has a team of <strong>eight members, six men and two women<\/strong>, and the teams compete with a series of tug-of-war competitions. The particularity of the \u201cPalio del Cero\u201d is given by the fact that it is not a direct tug-of-war: indeed, the two opposing teams, in addition to pulling the opposing team, have in the centre of the field a \u2018tower\u2019 of several quintals to move towards their own field. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-GB\">At the top of the tower there is a taper, (\u2018cero\u2019 in Italian, hence the name \u201cPalio del Cero\u201d), painted every year by an artist from Volterra, which will belong to the winning \u2018Contrada\u2019 together with the white and red flag of the Municipality of Volterra.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"western\"><span lang=\"en-GB\"><strong>The &#8220;palio&#8221; is preceded by the \u201cweighing of the salt<\/strong>\u201d and the \u201cblessing of the hemp\u201d.
