According to tradition, its name derives from that of the Roman general Silla who besieged Volterra in 80 BC.&nbsp;In reality, it is rather recent, being known until the mid-18th century as the castle or fortress of Sillano, a term first mentioned in a document dated 945.&nbsp;Instead, it is very likely that the term Sillano is a transformation of Silvanus &#8216;woody&#8217;, as this was an area very rich in woods.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Summer opening times until end September:<\/strong><br \/><strong>Friday \u2013 Saturday \u2013 Sunday. Access is by guided tour only. Tours depart from the Rocca\u2019s entrance gate at: 4 pm \u2013 5 pm \u2013 6 pm \u2013 7 pm. No booking required.  Admission: full price \u20ac5; concessions \u20ac4 (over 65s \/ 6\u201312 years).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Night guided tours in July and August SUSPENDED<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Rocca can be reached on foot via an 800-metre path starting from the car park.
