{"id":9643,"date":"2019-06-15T17:40:57","date_gmt":"2019-06-15T15:40:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/?post_type=attrazione&#038;p=9643"},"modified":"2024-01-19T10:39:55","modified_gmt":"2024-01-19T09:39:55","slug":"the-maschio-tower-torre-del-maschio","status":"publish","type":"attrazione","link":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/attrazione\/the-maschio-tower-torre-del-maschio\/","title":{"rendered":"Volterra | The &#8220;Maschio Tower&#8221;, Medici Fortress"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The imposing Fortezza Medicea, which dominates Volterra and characterises its skyline, was built in 1474, two years after the city was conquered by Florence at the end of a bitter war for control of the alum mines, a mineral used in the manufacture of textiles.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Old and the New Fortress<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n<p>The Fortress was not only intended to protect the city, but to keep it under control by preventing possible rebellions.
