{"id":9550,"date":"2019-06-15T11:09:33","date_gmt":"2019-06-15T09:09:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/?post_type=attrazione&#038;p=9550"},"modified":"2023-11-20T10:00:27","modified_gmt":"2023-11-20T09:00:27","slug":"national-museum-of-san-matteo","status":"publish","type":"attrazione","link":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/attrazione\/national-museum-of-san-matteo\/","title":{"rendered":"Pisa | National Museum of San Matteo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The <strong>National Museum of San Matteo<\/strong> <strong>is the most important museum of painting and sculpture of Pisa<\/strong> with real masterpieces ranging from the 12th to the 16th century.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>The collections<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-31505 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Maestro-di-Calci-Santa-Caterina-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Maestro-di-Calci-Santa-Caterina-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Maestro-di-Calci-Santa-Caterina-683x1024.jpg 683w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Maestro-di-Calci-Santa-Caterina-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Maestro-di-Calci-Santa-Caterina-247x370.jpg 247w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Maestro-di-Calci-Santa-Caterina-624x936.jpg 624w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Maestro-di-Calci-Santa-Caterina-825x1238.jpg 825w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/Maestro-di-Calci-Santa-Caterina.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It is located in the rooms of the ancient Benedictine monastery of St. Matteo in Soarta (11th century), of which, in addition to the <strong>church of the same name in Romanesque Pisan style<\/strong>, only a few medieval walls remain visible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It preserves the largest collection of ceramic basins in the Mediterranean area<\/strong> as well as the splendid section dedicated to <strong>illuminated codes<\/strong> with examples from the 12th to the 14th century.<\/p>\n<p>The collection of <strong>stone sculpture<\/strong> includes works from the Middle Ages to the sixteenth century, including testimonies of the &#8220;Romanesque&#8221; period and masterpieces by Nicola Pisano and Donatello.<\/p>\n<p>Of great importance is the <strong>collection of paintings<\/strong>: more than 200 works from the twelfth century by important artists such as <strong>Giunta Pisano<\/strong>, <strong>Berlinghiero<\/strong>, <strong>Masaccio<\/strong> and <strong>Simone Martini<\/strong> (author of the magnificent polyptych).<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2>The painted wooden crosses, pearls of the Pisan school<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The top of the Museum are undoubtedly the numerous painted wooden crosses<\/strong>, objects of worship and prayer in Tuscan churches and recognized as authentic pearls of the Pisan school. It was precisely in Pisa, between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, that a very significant event in religious art occurred: the iconographic model of the suffering Christ took the place of the older model of the triumphant Christ.
