{"id":69394,"date":"2026-03-31T11:58:39","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T09:58:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/?post_type=attrazione&#038;p=69394"},"modified":"2026-03-31T11:58:40","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T09:58:40","slug":"pisa-palazzo-dei-dodici-the-palace-of-the-twelves","status":"publish","type":"attrazione","link":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/attrazione\/pisa-palazzo-dei-dodici-the-palace-of-the-twelves\/","title":{"rendered":"Pisa, Palazzo dei Dodici (The Palace of the Twelves)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The palace in Piazza dei Cavalieri has changed its name over time depending on the magistracy it housed<\/strong>: Palazzo dell\u2019Archivio e della Cancelleria in the Middle Ages, then Palazzo dei Priori after the Florentine conquest, and finally Palazzo del Consiglio dei Dodici when it passed into the hands of the Order of the Knights of St. Stephen (the Council was a decision-making body of the Order, consisting of twelve selected members). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>At the end of the 16th century, the palace was renovated by the architect Pietro Francavilla,<\/strong> who brought it into harmony with the surrounding buildings in terms of height and decorative style, in the late-Renaissance style. The frieze on the cornice marks the completion of the work in 1603 under the Grand Duchy of Ferdinand I de\u2019 Medici. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The transfer to the Order did not occur until 1691, when <strong>the knights established their Tribunal here. <\/strong>The fa\u00e7ade features pink stucco against which the white marble decorations stand out: the window frames, the portal flanked by two columns, the openings on the main floor, the cornices, and the coat of arms. <br><br>The interior houses numerous works of art, such as the 16th-century bust of Ferdinand I, the fragment of a fresco of the Assumption from the school of Domenico Ghirlandaio (in the Hall of Coats of Arms on the first floor), and the Audience Hall, with walls entirely painted by Pietro Paolo Lippi and Antonio Giusti with maritime themes, surmounted by a carved, gilded, and painted ceiling depicting the Cardinal Virtues. <br><br>Today, the center of the hall\u2019s ceiling features Giovanni Camillo Gabrielli\u2019s <em>The Triumph of Saint Stephen<\/em> (1692), that replaced Salimbeni\u2019s <em>The Triumph of Pisa<\/em> after the building came into the Order\u2019s possession<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Open to the public on special events<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":13131,"parent":0,"template":"","tipo-attrazione":[1457],"filter-who":[1453,1455,1454,1452],"filter-time":[1448],"class_list":["post-69394","attrazione","type-attrazione","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tipo-attrazione-attrazione-cultura-en","filter-who-couple","filter-who-family","filter-who-adults","filter-who-single","filter-time-1-hour"],"acf":[],"wpml_current_locale":"en_US","wpml_translations":[{"locale":"it_IT","id":61636,"post_title":"Pisa | Palazzo dei Dodici, Piazza dei Cavalieri","href":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/pisa-palazzo-dei-dodici\/"}],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/attrazione\/69394","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/attrazione"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/attrazione"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/13131"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=69394"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"tipo-attrazione","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tipo-attrazione?post=69394"},{"taxonomy":"filter-who","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/filter-who?post=69394"},{"taxonomy":"filter-time","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/filter-time?post=69394"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
