It was once located on the Arno bank, at the point where the river curves. <strong>The Madonna (hence her name) therefore had to protect the population from frequent floods and floods.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the seventeenth century the humidity erased the frescoes of the small oratory except for the one depicting the Madonna and Child: the population interpreted this event as a miracle so much so that the church quickly became the destination for numerous pilgrims who left their votive offerings there. It was therefore decided to expand the building by creating a real Sanctuary (1614) which took its current shape the following century thanks to the intervention of the architect Ximenes.<\/p>\n<p>The current terracotta church has a Greek cross plan and a sober appearance, according to the style of the Franciscans who had it in custody.
