Much of its territory is included in the San Rossore Migliarino Massaciuccoli Natural Park, but it is characterised by vast agricultural areas, thanks to the proximity of Lake Massaciuccoli and the Serchio River. The Migliarino Estate, one of the Park’s seven estates, constitutes with its 3700 hectares the area of greatest economic importance.

Already in the past it had been the centre of a large estate, known as Selva Regia or Palatina, which in the 11th century had been divided into two parts by Countess Matilda of Canossa: one donated to the Church of San Nicola in Pisa, the other to the Pisan Orlandi and Pellari families.

In the 16th century, it passed to the Florentine Salviati family. The first to take charge of the property and initiate a series of interventions to reorganise the area (later to become a park) was Duke Scipione Borghese Salviati, who in the 19th century had a road network built, deviating the route of the Via Aurelia (which today divides the town into two parts) and giving the pine forest its current appearance.

Migliarino Pisano is today well connected with Florence and Liguria thanks to the Pisa Nord motorway exit.
