{"id":34653,"date":"2022-09-13T11:22:33","date_gmt":"2022-09-13T09:22:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/attrazione\/calcinaia-chapel-of-santo-stefano-in-sardina\/"},"modified":"2026-03-26T11:28:16","modified_gmt":"2026-03-26T10:28:16","slug":"calcinaia-chapel-of-santo-stefano-in-sardina","status":"publish","type":"attrazione","link":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/attrazione\/calcinaia-chapel-of-santo-stefano-in-sardina\/","title":{"rendered":"Calcinaia | Chapel of santo Stefano in Sardina"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The name &#8216;Sardina&#8217; is attested as far back as the 15th century: the present chapel is dedicated to Saint Stephen Protomartyr and stands more or less on the spot where the ancient chapel of San Lorenzo had existed since 1083.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2>History, from property to property<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-34651 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/cappella-Sardina-300x296.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"296\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/cappella-Sardina-300x296.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/cappella-Sardina-320x316.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/cappella-Sardina.jpg 608w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ownership of the chapel passed in 1455 from the Archdiocese of Pisa to the Monastery of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/attrazione\/calci-convent-of-nicosia\/\">Canons of Nicosia<\/a><\/strong>, near Calci, who, however, did not take care of the small church until the mid-18th century when they rebuilt it in late Baroque style and consecrated it to the Blessed Arcangelo Canetoli, a member of their order. A canvas with his image is preserved inside.<\/p>\n<p>In 1780, the Nicosia monastery was suppressed and the oratory purchased first by the Morelli family and then by the Corsi family.
