{"id":11665,"date":"2019-07-28T10:09:17","date_gmt":"2019-07-28T08:09:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/?post_type=attrazione&#038;p=11665"},"modified":"2024-03-07T21:36:50","modified_gmt":"2024-03-07T20:36:50","slug":"baptistry-volterra","status":"publish","type":"attrazione","link":"https:\/\/www.terredipisa.it\/en\/attrazione\/baptistry-volterra\/","title":{"rendered":"Volterra | Baptistry of San Giovanni"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Baptistery was built in the <strong>13th century<\/strong>, although some architectural and decorative elements would date it to an earlier period.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>interior<\/strong>, in local Volterra stone, has six niches set into the thick walls, following a technique used in this area in the 12th century. Its domed <strong>octagonal shape<\/strong> has a fa\u00e7ade covered in white and green marble with a portal that clearly shows the influence of the <strong>Pisa Romanesque style<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Inside are sculptures by Mino da Fiesole and Alessandro Balsimelli da Settignano, while the altarpiece is by Nicol\u00f2 Cercignani, known as <strong>Pomarancio<\/strong>.
