The archaeological site of the Copper Mine lies on the outskirts of Montecatini Val di Cecina in a splendid location. In operation until 1907, the area was the largest copper mine in Europe in the 19th century and gave its name to one of the major industries of the 20th century: Montecatini S.p.A., which later became Montedison, a historic milestone in the field of copper extraction. Of the entire mining complex, which dates back to Etruscan times, parts of the 19th-century tunnels can be visited today (the network originally extended for about 35 kilometres to a depth of 315 metres), as well as the Pozzo Alfredo tower with its lift “suspended above visitors” heads’, the former offices and chemical analysis laboratory, and the washing facilities
