Chestnut Festival in Calci

Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 October appointment in Calci with the Chestnut Festival, now in its 38th edition.

The food stands offer sweet pancakes, necci, castagnaccio and roasted chestnuts, plus some typical products of the Valgraziosa area, on Saturdays from 3.00pm and Sundays from 2.30pm.

The inhabitants of Calces already cultivated chestnuts at the time of the Pisan Republic, in fact the first records date back to 1171. From the mid-sixteenth century the “cannicci” or “metati” began to spread, i.e. small houses scattered on Monte Pisano where the chestnuts. The festival seems to have started as a joke in 1982 when the boys went to La Foce to make roasted chestnuts and then distribute them to passers-by in the streets of Calci.
