On the road from Terricciola to Chianni we find the Sanctuary of the Immaculate Conception, also known as the ‘Madonna di Monterosso‘, a place of popular devotion.
Its current appearance is the result of an 18th-century renovation that modified the pre-existing place of worship called “Castum Vetere” where the ancient church of “Castelvecchio” stood.
The exterior shows an elegant portico, partly tampered with by careless restoration work, on which the coat of arms of Terricciola stands out, divided in half between the Pisan cross and the Florentine lily.
The interior, with single nave and barrel-vaulted ceiling, is striking for the refinement of the decorations carried out after the tragic earthquake of 1846. The 19th century frescoes in the dome depict the Immaculate Conception. Note the rich polychrome marble altar that contributes to making the Sanctuary a wedding venue.
