The Parish Church of San Giovanni Battista is located in Piazza Martiri della Libertà, in Buti. In the Middle Ages, it was the most important Pisan Romanesque-style church in the area.
The Parish Church, architectural highlights
Its construction is believed to date back to the 10th century. The bell tower, characterized by an unusual domed covering, was created from a medieval tower that retained its crenellations until the 19th century. Few traces of the Romanesque construction remain, as it was reconstructed in the early 17th century in the Baroque style and expanded in the early 20th century.
The preserved works
The interior of the church, with walls frescoed by Pietro Giarrè, houses a statue of the Madonna del Rosario (16th century), a sculpture of the Madonna with Child in carved wood (14th century), and a crucifix in carved and gilded wood (16th century).
The baptismal font and the main altar are entirely carved in Carrara marble, while the side altars are made of pietra serena.
