DESCRIZIONE

The Baptistery was built in the 13th century, although some architectural and decorative elements would date it to an earlier period.

The interior, in local Volterra stone, has six niches set into the thick walls, following a technique used in this area in the 12th century. Its domed octagonal shape has a façade covered in white and green marble with a portal that clearly shows the influence of the Pisa Romanesque style.

Inside are sculptures by Mino da Fiesole and Alessandro Balsimelli da Settignano, while the altarpiece is by Nicolò Cercignani, known as Pomarancio. In the niche to the right of the altar is a pentagon-shaped baptismal font by Andrea Cuntucci, known as Sansovino.
